Mission Statement

Objectives

Understanding the multiple processes which interact to shape learning and create student outcomes within educational institutions.

The development of models and theories to explain variations in educational effectiveness at different levels: the student level, the class level, the school level and the system level.

The study of the extent, stability and consistency of the effect of schools, teaching and classes at diverse moments, in diverse grades and for diverse student outcomes and other criteria such as differential effectiveness for different student groups.

The development of indicators and indicator systems to register educational effects at different levels.

The improvement of the measurement of relevant variables and the study of analytical techniques which are relevant for research into educational effectiveness and large scale evaluations.


Main Topics and Methodology

Factors influencing the effectiveness of schools and teaching, including mediating and moderating variables.

The large scale evaluation of schools, programmes and educational systems, including the nature and extent of the equity gap in achievement for different student groups.

The SIG considers studies in primary schools, secondary schools, in higher education and in adult education. It also considers multiple outcomes such as student achievement, cross-curricular competencies, motivation and student well being.

A longitudinal multilevel approach at student, teacher, school and/or system level and/or a quasi-experimental approach is considered as appropriate in many studies. Nonetheless the SIG welcomes new and innovative approaches (for example regression discontinuity or randomised experiments) to the study of educational effects and the use of mixed methods designs.
